InnoDB operates 16KB memory and table pages, whereas underlying Linux filesystems and drive controllers write in 4KB atomic sectors. A crash midway through writing a 16KB page results in a torn, corrupted block that cannot be recovered via redo logging alone.
The Doublewrite Buffer flushes pages sequentially to a dedicated storage area first, providing an untorn replica for crash recovery if torn writes occur.
