MongoDB WiredTiger Journaling (Write-Ahead Logging)

The append-only write-ahead log stream that guarantees durability between periodic WiredTiger checkpoints in the event of an abrupt process crash or power outage.

Internal Architecture Breakdown

Checkpoints write clean data blocks every 60 seconds; without journaling, an unexpected power failure would lose all writes executed since the last checkpoint.

WiredTiger flushes journal commits every 100ms or immediately on j: true writes. On restart, the crash recovery mechanism replays logged operations from the last checkpoint LSN forward.
